Abstract

The Development of a Bachelor’s Degree Completion Program in Science andTechnology FieldsEvery year, thousands of Americans drop out of college due to unforeseen circumstancesand enter the workforce without finishing their post-secondary education. Many neverreturn to college, despite having a strong desire to finish their bachelor’s degree. On theother hand, economic trends have increasingly shown the importance of science andtechnology industries in today’s marketplace and yet there is a shortage of properlytrained graduates to contribute to the advancement of these fields. Among the institutionsof higher education there is a sense of urgency to promote studies in the STEM (Science,Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) fields. To address both of these issues, TheGeorge Washington University’s College of Professional Studies has developed andimplemented a Bachelor’s Degree Completion Program, with emphasis on STEM fieldsfor working professionals and adult learners who are interested in careers in science andtechnology. This new Bachelor’s Degree Completion Program in Integrated Information,Science, and Technology provides an opportunity for non-traditional students to finishtheir degree in two innovative tracks of Information Technology and Biotechnology.Through partnerships with the D.C. Metropolitan area community colleges, the programalso aims to increase the retention rate at the community college level by being analternative route for students to continue their studies beyond an associate’s degree. Thispaper will provide a comprehensive look at the curriculum for the program and itsinterdisciplinary approach in teaching science and technology. It will also highlight someof the future plans to expand such endeavors for the enhancement of careers in scienceand technology.
