Bahawodin Baha University of Brighton

Dr Bahawodin Baha is a principal lecturer at University of Brighton in England since 1989, where he has been teaching and conducting research in electronic engineering.

Besides his teaching in the UK, he has been helping Higher Education (HE) in Afghanistan since 2005 and has conducted my projects on improving higher education in Afghanistan.
Recently, he was on sabbatical leave for two years and was technical advisor at the Ministry of Communication and Information Technology (MICT) in Afghanistan. During his work, he worked very closely with the Ministry of Higher Education (MoHE) and Kabul based universities.

He was a visiting scholar at Virginia Polytechnic, Institute and Sate University in the USA in 1991 – 1992.

Maria Diakoumi MEng, Ph.D, FHEA, CEng MCIHT University of Brighton

Dr Diakoumi is a Principal Lecturer in Civil Engineering at the School of Environment and Technology, University of Brighton. She has 10 years of both academic and industrial experience in the field of Civil Engineering. Her teaching and research activities lie in the areas of geotechnical engineering and engineering education. Dr Diakoumi received her MEng degree in Civil Engineering from the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Greece and Ph.D degree in Geotechnical Engineering from the University of Southampton, U.K.
Dr Diakoumi is a chartered engineer and member of the Chartered Institution of Highways and Transportation (CIHT), a fellow of the Higher Education Academy and a member of the Professional Network for Engineers Without Borders (EWB).

Hamidullah Waizy

Hamidullah Waizy is an assistant professor at the Department of Geological Engineering and Exploration of Mines, Kabul Polytechnic University, Afghanistan. He has received his first BSc (Hons, 2008) degree in Geology from the aforementioned Department. He completed his second BSc (Hons, upper 2nd class), MSc and PhD in Geology at University of Brighton in the UK. His PhD studies were about the Geology and genesis of the Aynak Copper Deposits in the Kabul Basin, Afghanistan which he has completed in 2018. In addition, Hamidullah Waizy was employed as demonstrator and lecturer on the casual basis at University of Brighton while he was conducting his research and he was teaching courses such as mineralogy, petrography and economic geology.

Abstract

Abstract The advancements in science, engineering and technologies during the last few centuries have enormously promoted the development of the education in many parts of the world. Such educational development has consequently improved the quality of life and brought prosperity to these areas. However, not every part of the world benefited from such educational development, especially areas which have been affected by wars and instabilities where the standard of life has not improved at the same rate The vast majority of less developed countries adopt either the US or European style of engineering education without careful consideration of the needs of the local population, economy and environment and the existence of suitable local industries. Therefore, such educational systems may be less productive and prove ineffective. In this paper, an investigation is undertaken to carefully evaluate the quality and relevance of the science, engineering and technology education in Afghanistan. The paper is focused on the following issues: a. The style (US or European) of the science, engineering and technology education adopted in Afghanistan b. The relevance of the science, engineering and technology education to the local economic development and future prosperity Establishing a suitable scientific and engineering educational system is a major challenge for less developed countries, especially countries which have been affected by wars and instabilities. This paper provides recommendations addressing these challenges which will lead the less developed countries towards a better, more self-sufficient future.
