Chu Zhaowei, Ph.D candidate at Institute of China’s Science Technology and Education Policy, School of Public Affairs, Zhejiang University. He holds BS degree in Material Physics from Nanjing University of Information Science and Technology in 2015, and MS degree in Education from Zhejiang University in 2017. He is currently interested in engineering education, global competence and innovation management.
Hu Shunshun is a PhD student in the Institute of China’s Science, Technology and Education Policy at Zhejiang University in Hangzhou, Zhejiang. He received a BA in Marketing from the Nanjing University of Chinese Medicine in 2015, and a MA in Educational Economic and Management from College of Public Administration, Nanjing agricultural University in 2018. He is currently interested in higher engineering education, engineering education policy, and emerging engineering education.
Bifeng ZHANG is a PhD student at Zhejiang University in Hangzhou, Zhejiang, China. He received his BE degree from Beijing University of Posts and Telecommunications and MBA degree from Zhejiang University. His research focuses on engineering education and systematic innovation.
TRIZ is a method that identifies contradiction in a given problem and then searches for previous solutions that have solved. However, there are still some controversies on the effectiveness of TRIZ. This study focuses on three issues: (1) What is the effectiveness of applying TRIZ? (2) Is there a difference about the effectiveness of different tools? (3) How to improve the training effect according to the effectiveness of the TRIZ tools? Understanding those questions provide an opportunity to improve the applying of TRIZ, a more efficient use, and even the possibility of improving the method itself. The research process is as follows: (1) Develop evaluation criteria based on the technical innovation benefit evaluation method provided by the Oslo Manual;(2) Questionnaire survey on more than 300 engineers about the application of TRIZ and its benefits; (3) Regression analysis was performed between TRIZ and technological innovation results, to find out the contribution of different tools to the comprehensive benefits of technological innovation; (4) Thinking about how to improve the training effectiveness of TRIZ. Through the above research, the authors found that the effects of TRIZ have the following characteristics: (1) there are large differences among different TRIZ tools about their effectiveness; (2) using TRIZ can obtain good technical innovation benefits, but TRIZ has more significant economic and intellectual property benefits and a relatively poor social benefits. In view of the increasing number of TRIZ training, we should make improvements from the following aspects: (1) Pay attention to the weaknesses of TRIZ tools' lack of social benefits, and take into account both long-term social benefits and short-term economic benefits; (2) Focus on improvement those low effectiveness of TRIZ tools, to increase the overall efficiency of the TRIZ application.
