Abstract

Through this paper, the author addresses the challenges faced by local companies in hiring and retaining talented engineering students for long-term employment, particularly in regions where it is difficult to find engineers locally. The paper highlights how a small, teaching-focused private university can build relationships with local companies by introducing key semiconductor fields that are in high demand in Texas and across the United States. This is achieved through field trips, industry engagement, and the development of market- and industry-driven courses to better prepare students for roles in these target areas. The paper further explores efforts to align semiconductor engineering courses with industry needs while enhancing students' hands-on competencies. It provides examples of how students are given practical, real-world experiences in semiconductor theory and applications, effectively equipping them to meet industry demands. Additionally, it discusses the creation of impactful courses and curriculum improvements to train future-ready engineers while fostering stronger connections between local companies and schools in the region and beyond. By promoting collaboration with companies of varying sizes and characteristics, the author presents a vision for a win-win strategy that prepares students for careers in the semiconductor field while addressing the workforce needs of the industry. Through this presentation, the author also aims to offer recommendations for schools and educators in the Texas region to work together more holistically, creating synergy to better support students, strengthen the local industry, and contribute to the region’s future workforce development.
