Seyed Mohammad Seyed Ardakani P.E. Ohio Northern University

Dr. Ardakani is an Associate Professor of Civil Engineering at Ohio Northern University. He has previously served as a Project Engineer at Englekirk Structural Engineers and a Lecturer at South Dakota State University. He obtained his Ph.D. in Civil Engineering from the University of Nevada, Reno. His research interests include engineering education, seismic performance and design of reinforced concrete structures, and computational modeling of structures. He received the 2020-21 Professor Henry Horldt Outstanding Teaching Award.

Julia Kamatali is an undergraduate student in Computer Engineering at Ohio Northern University (ONU). Her research focuses on integrating gamification into engineering education to enhance student engagement. She is currently designing and developing an escape room game using Unreal Engine 5 as a learning tool for Statics courses that aims to provide an engaging alternative to traditional textbook homework. She is also researching current approaches to gamified learning environments and their application in education.

Abstract

Statics is a fundamental engineering course where students learn to analyze forces and moments acting on rigid bodies in equilibrium. The course is essential for understanding structural and mechanical systems. However, many students find it challenging due to the abstract nature of the concepts taught in class. To address this, we are developing a gamified learning activity designed to increase student understanding and engagement in Statics. The current study focuses on creating a single-player video game using Unreal Engine. In the game, students solve Statics-related problems in an escape-room format. Players navigate through various rooms, each presenting a unique Statics problem that needs to be solved before moving to the next room. By incorporating gamified elements and interactive problem-solving with course material, the game aims to improve students' interest and motivation to foster engagement with the content compared to traditional teaching methods like lectures, textbook reading assignments, and quizzes. A detailed review of the game’s design is presented in this paper.
