Abstract

Work-In-Progress: Student Organization Budget Success Student clubs and organizations are impacted by financial management to support their events. This study evaluates the effectiveness of monthly budget training for student organization executive board members. While the focus is on the College of Engineering, our goal is to demonstrate the broader benefits of specific training workshops designed to help students succeed in managing their organizations. In 2024, Maximizing Engineering Potential and Women in Science and Engineering (MEP-WiSE) implemented a series of budget training workshops for four student organizations. Student leaders provided anecdotal feedback. One student leader president shared: “Communication between clubs and their financial advisors hold great value. By providing financial workshops, student leaders are better equipped to handle club logistics. One note is to hold Zoom meetings over the summer to give clubs a head-start on budget comprehension.” Another student leader president noted the importance of best practices regarding “knowledge about financial advice, budgeting, and ASI and philanthropic budget policies” as they relate to filling out specific budget forms. A treasurer student leader, stated, “Without prior knowledge of club finances, we would not have been able to successfully send 40+ students to conferences, workshops, trainings, and networking opportunities.” Aside from feedback gleaned from small-group discussions, a survey of engineering students serving in executive board positions—who have not received budget training—will help identify gaps in knowledge regarding organizational budgets. We will analyze survey results in order to develop a plan for providing budget training designed to close skills gaps and help student leaders meet student success goals related to the mission of their organization. A pre- and post-survey will measure impact of the budget training workshops.
