Wireless Communications Model Program Development

ABSTRACT The goal of this project is the modification of an existing Electronics Engineering Technology Associate of Applied Science (AAS) Degree Program to include Wireless Communications, the development and implementation of new Wireless Communications AAS and credit certificate programs articulated from high school, through community college, and to the university level. With multiple entry and exit these new programs will incorporate work-relevant, industry-driven curricula that integrates “best practices” in IT education with industry skills standards and certifications, preparing technicians for the wireless communications industry. The project components include curriculum development and adaptation, program development, professional development for high school and community college faculty, and development of a 2+2+2 articulation. As a part of a network of regional partners working with the National Center for Telecommunications Technologies (NCTT), the project will serve as the focal point for regional dissemination of this curricula and training to regional business and industry. In addition to NCTT, strategic partnerships have been established to achieve the objectives of this project, which include:

• Develop and disseminate a state-of-the-art wireless communications program reflective of regional industry need; • Support NCTT in establishing a nationwide telecommunications education program; • Develop collaborations with regional high school, 2-year and 4-year colleges and business and industry; • Provide professional development for regional collaborating institutions; • Plan, develop, and host academic/industry training seminars; • Contribute to regional institutions’ program improvement; and This work will benefit regional industry, government agencies, high school teachers and students, community college faculty and students, those switching into information technology careers, and those with bachelor’s degrees in unrelated fields.
