Ten Year Experience of Global Capstone Design Projects in China Yiming Rong Worcester Polytechnic Institute, Worcester, MA, USA, rong@wpi.eduAbstractAs the economy becomes more and more globalized, the need for engineers withinternational background is growing fast not only in quantity but also in quality withdifferent performance measures. In order to provide the society with quality engineers inthe new century, engineering education has been developed more and more in threedimensions, i.e., academic, entrepreneurial, and social components of the learningprocess. This paper describes our exploration of integrating these components in acomprehensive project practice in the senior project center in China. In addition toenhancing academic acquisition of scientific knowledge and problem solving ability, thenon-technical skills have been practiced in doing real world projects sponsored by globalcompanies. Through working in mixed teams with members from USA and China, thestudents have the opportunity to grow and becoming better global citizens. They learn tounderstand the society and the social responsibility of a qualified engineer. They alsolearn from each other by living and working together during the project period. Thisenriches their cultural background, high-quality human being, and cross cultureunderstanding.
