Abstract

An Enhanced Approach for the Power System Course Using a Computer-Based Visualization Tool for Steady-State Power System SimulationThis paper proposes an enhanced approach for the power engineering course, as part of theundergraduate electrical engineering curriculum, using a computer-based power systemsimulator. In order to assist students’ understanding of complex phenomena in power systems,steady-state power system analysis using a visualization tool is performed. The objective of thecourse enhancement is a response to the need for more efficient tools in power engineeringeducation and to the impending demand for quality power engineers by power utilities. Thevisualization tool to be used in the course can aid students in obtaining a practical understandingof the power system analysis problems when used as a supplement to traditional lectureapproaches. In addition, the visualization tool enables students to have more interests in powersystem topics by obtaining a sense of what was happening within the power system. This paperintroduces several power system visualization techniques including animation and contouring ofpower flows and map data projections.
