Ali Mehrabian Daytona State College
Dr. Ali Mehrabian is an Associate Professor at the College of Engineering, Technology at Daytona State College in Daytona Beach, Florida since August 2010. Formerly, he was a faculty member at the University of Central Florida, Orlando. Ali is an avid distance learner and has extensive background in distance learning instructional methods and delivery systems in engineering and technology. He has been a mentor and an advisor in distance learning and online education delivery systems conversions and modifications throughout his professional life.
Walter W. Buchanan Texas A&M University
Walt Buchanan is the J.R. Thompson Chair Professor at Texas A&M University. He is a Fellow and served on the Board of Directors of both ASEE and NSPE, is Past-Chair of the Professional Engineers in Higher Education of NSPE, is a Past President of the Massachusetts Society of Professional Engineers, and is a registered P.E. in six states. He is a past member of the Executive Committee of TAC of ABET. Buchanan is on the editorial board of the Journal of Engineering Technology, has authored over 170 publications, and has been a principal investigator for NSF.
Alireza Rahrooh Daytona State College
Alireza Rahrooh is an Associate Professor of Electrical Engineering Technology at Dayton State College. He received the B.S., M.S., and Ph.D. degrees in Electrical Engineering from the Univ. of Akron, in 1979, 1986, and 1990, respectively. His research interests include digital simulation, nonlinear dynamics, chaos, control theory, system identification, and adaptive control. He is a member of ASEE, IEEE, Eta Kappa Nu, and Tau Beta Pi.
Abstract
Free Access to Technology for International Online Engineering EducationOpen source technology and its accessibility play a vital role in a cost-effective androbustly accessible online engineering education. This role becomes even more vital indeveloping countries where there are much engineering education demand and where thesupply of accessible technology may be cost prohibitive and not as accessible. Thispaper encapsulates some of the freely accessible state-of-the-art open source technologyand their applications for international online engineering education and addresses somekey features of the current technology. Open source technology is not very usefulwithout the appropriate tools. Thus, discussions also include some open source tools tofacilitate the access and the cost-effectiveness.
