Abstract

Virtual Power Producers and Distributed Generation in Energy Trading Markets: An Approach to the Integration of Renewable Energy in Latin America Simón De Los Ríos Director José Carlos Quadrado Instituto Superior de Engenheira de Lisboa - ISEL Rua Conselheiro Emídio Navarro, 1. 1949 - 014 Lisboa - Portugal ABSTRACTIn order for governments from around the world, but more specifically from Latin America tobe able to respond and meet increases in electrical power demand in the coming years anddeal with the tightening of global environmental standards; a shift from the currentconventional electricity production has to be altered, and new innovative energy productionalternatives have to be evaluated and introduced. There is no silver bullet for tackling thisissue; a profound change has to take place in all areas of the electrical energy spectrum –generation, transmission and distribution. However, Distributed Generation promises to bethe best all-around solution for solving increasing energy demand, reducing peak loads, jobcreation, improving distribution and transmission reliability, positive environmental impactand providing electrical power to rural areas. This paper aims to examine the integration ofDistributed Generation from Renewable Energy sources into electrical markets in LatinAmerica, specifically in Argentina, Chile and Colombia; aided by an energy market simulationtool – MASCEM that creates a technical and organizational framework, that allows the tradeof electrical energy from Distributed Generation be competitive in existing energy markets.Key Words - Latin America, Energy Market, Virtual Power Producers, Distributed Generation,Renewable Energy Simón De Los Ríos | José Carlos Quadrado
