Professor Durfee received his B.S. and M.S. degrees in Mechanical Engineering from Brigham Young University. He holds a Professional Engineer certification. Prior to teaching at Eastern Washington University, he was a military pilot, an engineering instructor at West Point and an airline pilot. His interests include aerospace, aviation, professional ethics and piano technology.

Abstract

Using a Series of Advertising Videos to Illustrate Solid Mechanics and Material-Related Design Issues in the Engineering Technology CurriculumAbstractHelping students relate what they learn in an engineering technology course to actual physicaldesigns is a worthy goal. Five years ago in an attempt to help students see how knowledge ofmaterial properties translates into how materials are used in the design of mechanical parts ledme to the use of a series of advertising videos produced by the Ford Motor Company. It wasaround this time that Ford had completed a major redesign on their popular F-150 series oftrucks. In order to market their design they started placing a display in Ford dealerships showingthe positive aspects of their new vehicle. Included on the display were DVDs titled, “The TruthAbout Trucks,” that could be taken home by any interested party. I viewed one of these DVDsand discovered that mixed in with the hard-selling advertising were numerous examples of howthe engineers at Ford had solved their design problems by the particular materials that theychose. I created an accompanying question worksheet that required the students to watch theseries of videos from the DVD and answer questions about specific engineering and material-related things that they observed. The worksheet wasn’t difficult for students to complete and itbecame a fun and successful way to create excitement in the application of the material theywere learning in class. As our student enrollment and faculty members grew I eventually passedthis course on to a newer department member. I missed the fun we had using these videos inclass and realized that the video also helped illustrate concepts of stress, strain and other topics inthe solid mechanics course I was still teaching. I re-wrote my question worksheet and used thevideos in that course as well. This paper will explain how I used these advertising videos inclass to help illustrate material selection and solid mechanics topics. It will discuss what aspectsof the assignment helped engage the students and how it helped create a link with the local Forddealerships.
