AB  -    Program for Student Retention and Success in Engineering                            xxxx, xxxx, and xxx                                   xxxx                                xxxx, xxxx                                 AbstractThe world is facing challenges that require a highly-skilled and creativeengineering workforce. This paper describes a recruitment and retentionprogram that is designed to improve the recruitment and retention ofhighly motivated minority students and to keep their interests alive inengineering. The program involves recruiting a Pre-Engineering Cohortthat participates in a number of enrichment activities, including a SummerTransfer Engineering Workshop (STEW). STEW is a two weekresidential program that introduces cohort participants to the engineeringdegree programs offered by the xxxxx University. Participants live incampus residence halls during the program and interact with departmentfaculty, staff and students through several activities, including informationsessions, field trips, laboratory tours, and design projects. While studentsare exposed to the various engineering fields, they also improve theircritical thinking and problem solving skills. The paper will presentdetails about the 2009 and 2010 workshops, together with the extent ofwhat worked and what did not work in achieving the goals.
