AB  -    Education and Training Requirements for a Practicing Civil Engineer            to Qualify in Australasia and the United Kingdom        The making a qualified and competent civil engineer requires formal education,practical training and an examination. Qualification is an indication of competence andwillingness to shoulder the legal responsibility required to be a civil engineer. It also givesthe general public the sense of confidence for engineering works designed and constructed bycivil engineers. The requirements and procedure of qualification can be stipulated in lawand/or controlled by professional organizations. Different jurisdictions have thus imposeddifferent conditions to suit their requirements. While civil engineering education programs inmost jurisdictions do not differ too much from each other, the training programs amongjurisdictions may vary significantly. The examination systems exhibit even more differences.        Australasia, Hong Kong, Singapore, India, Malaysia, Australia, New Zealand etc.used to be part of the British Commonwealth. As a result, the qualification requirements andprocedure are basically modeled on the British system. However, they have been modified tosuits the needs of these jurisdictions.        In this paper, these requirements will be depicted. The British system will also bedescribed as it forms the backbone of the other systems. The reciprocal agreements amongthese requirements will also be discussed to understand the inter-recognition of thesejurisdiction so that civil engineers can be a global workforce for the betterment of mankind.
