Abstract

The School of Engineering and Computing Sciences (SoECS) of New York Institute of Technology(NYIT) is launching a new Entrepreneurship and Technology Innovation Center (ETIC) with NewYork State funding from the Empire State Development Corporation. The ETIC will consolidateand expand the School’s ongoing industry-academic partnerships by, fostering innovation andpromoting collaborations between industries, the academic community, professional organizations, and government. As a source for talent, entrepreneurship, and innovation in technology, engineering and applied science, the Center is expected to spur economic growth and ensure greatercompetitiveness for Long Island and the broader metropolitan region.ETIC is a direct response to the demand for skilled engineering and computer scientists in theNY Metropolitan Region and places NYIT in an ideal position to address deficiencies in theengineering workforce as identified in a recent 2011 poll.ETIC is being created with the assistance of an Advisory Board with members from industry, government, and the venture capital community, who have agreed to work on three high growthfocus areas for the Center,: IT and Cybersecurity, Energy and Cleantech, Bioengineering and e-Health. The Board will review plans to create high-tech teaching and research laboratories that meetindustry workforce demands and projections in these three areas. So far, ETIC has received thesupport of the School’s Industrial Advisory Boards in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical &Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Energy and Environment, and the Dean’s ExecutiveAdvisory Board comprised collectively of over 35 members and potential partners in this initiative,as well as private organizations, industry groups and government organizations. Board companiesare donating some of the equipment as well as in kind contributions to the planning, design andspecifications phase.Throughout this collaborative process, established companies will work with NYIT students andfaculty to research, develop, and demonstrate new technologies. University residenceopportunities will be made available to industry practitioners at the Center, and conversely,Industry operational residence opportunities will be available to NYIT faculty.ETIC will also support entrepreneurship by providing facilities for entrepreneurs/startups outside of NYITto design new technologies, to test proofs of concept, to develop fully marketable products, and tohave access to faculty and skilled students. A separate Entrepreneurship Board will review proposals, select companies, and introduce entrepreneurs to both venture capitalists and potential NYIT partners. In addition to the core mission of the center, early planning has also begun on K-12 outreach programs, which could include industry-supported hack-a-thons, technology camps, and field trips to businesses inthe region. Similarly, advisory committee members and faculty have begun discussing how to integratenew curriculum modules, courses, and programs to close skill gaps within industry. In sum, the Center will create a paradigm shift in the way education is tied to economic growth andenhance existing programs at NYIT and it may serve as a model for collaborations between industryand other academic institutions. To document this effort and facilitate its broader adoption, thispaper will provide a detailed description of the project, indicating what is being planned, designed,and/or constructed, the issues/opportunities to be addressed, and expected outcomes anddeliverables of each of its constituents.
