Abstract

Generic Skills Improvement of Engineering Students using Project-Based Learning in a Project Management Course.AbstractThe evident fast speed on technology changes, the increase in social exigencies and theneed to take good care of the environment, made evident that engineering graduatesmust have generic skills of holistic nature to face with success their future professionalchallenges. This paper shows the impact that had the project based learningmethodology in the improvement of generic skills, among a group of industrialengineering students in a project management course. Measurements of the student'sknowledge and domain of technical, contextual and behavioral skills were performed atthe beginning and end of the term. Written questionnaires that measured the threedimensions were used; also a statistical and regression analysis was conducted. Theresults shows significant evidence on the improvement of the students’ skills that isexplained by the use of the project based learning (BPL). It is known that the BPL isone of the possible ways to improve generic skills, but it could be use as a powerful toolthat balance and complement engineering undergraduate curricula that aim thedevelopment of those skills with holistic dimension in the students.Key words: generic skills, BPL, higher education engineering, Project management.
