Integrating Online Identity Management Tools in a Complete Social Media Literacy Curriculum for Engineering and Technology StudentsArguments have been made in engineering education about the necessity to includesocial media literacy in the engineering and technology curriculum. Social media literacyincludes the skills of creating and managing online reputation strategically, in order toensure that students’ online identity supports rather than jeopardizes their professionalcareer goals (Vorvoreanu, Clark, & Boisvenue, 2012). Online entrepreneurs haverecognized this market need and met it with an abundance of online services and toolsthat purport to aid the management of online identity. In this study, we set out to conductan in-depth analysis and categorization of available online identity tools, their features,and pricing plans. This analysis serves the following purposes:1. It surveys the existing range of online identity management tools and services in order to create a map of available options that can simplify students’ and educators’ decision-making about choosing and using such tools. As educators, as we include online identity management in engineering and technology curricula, we need to stay current as to the availability of tools, services, and features and be able to make informed recommendations to students. The present analysis of existing tools will provide a useful guide for both educators and students concerned with managing their online reputation.2. It evaluates the current market offerings and their appropriateness for addressing the online identity management needs of engineering and technology students. It identifies market opportunities for the education community to adapt or create novel tools that serve the specific needs of our student population.3. It integrates existing online management tools within existing frameworks for managing online identity in order to create an improved social media literacy curriculum that pairs ideas about methods for managing online identity with specific tools that can assist at particular steps of the process.
