AB  -        Leveraging Summer Immersive Experiences into ABET Curricula        Summer immersive experiences for undergraduate students in Aeronautical andMechanical Engineering programs have several names and come in varied forms. In many cases,they represent a substantial effort on behalf of staff, faculty, and financial resources in order toeffectively coordinate. They include broad goals that span the individual, the supportingprogram, and the client. Typical experiences range from work in governmental laboratories andresearch centers, industry partners, and include graduate research experiences at distantlocations. In some cases, work done in a summer program extends either into a Capstone projector other research or design related experience thereby extending the effective project duration.        This work provides a context for evaluating the utility of these work experiences,measuring their effectiveness across American Board of Engineering and Technology (ABET)program outcomes and assessing their contribution to student learning and motivation tocontinue to learn. A survey of 70 cadets who conducted immersive experiences related toAeronautical and Mechanical Engineering from two different institutions has been conducted,with both qualitative and quantitative results analyzed and presented. Student satisfaction ismeasured with each experience type, with linkage to overall program performance. Anassessment of the types and numbers of projects sustained beyond the summer project duration isprovided. Finally, the unique contributions available from the experience are balanced with theadministrative requirements to suggest a best practice in leveraging the most from theseexperiences and to assist programs who might consider initiating or refining their ownparticipation in similar programs.
