AB  - Engineering Education Outside the Classroom: Investigating the Construction andContestation of Engineering Knowledge in A Public Forum from the Perspective ofGraduate Engineering StudentsIn April 2013, a group of graduate science and engineering students at a Midwestern USUniversity hosted a public forum concentrating on the topic of natural gas fracking withthe goal of providing the public with reliable information about the risks, benefits, andharms fracking provides society at-large. Panelists answered audience questions afterpresenting. Four graduate engineering students were interviewed about the constructionof the forum. In this paper, a preliminary thematic analysis of interview data is presentedwhere students explain their roles in moderating the information flow within the forum.The implications of the interpretive analysis probes the perspectives of engineers’ viewsof the public, norms of communicating engineering knowledge with the public, and theforum’s affect on professional engineering identity.
