Abstract

Improving Student Learning of Basic Electronic Circuits Concepts using Web-Based Tools Zekeriya Aliyazicioglu, Rajan M. Chandra, Phyllis R. Nelson, Jolly Kuo, and Shailesh Sujanani Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, California State Polytechnic University, Pomona, California 91768, USA.Student success in electrical engineering is built on mastery of foundational networkanalysis concepts such as Kirchhoff's laws and the Thevenin and Norton theorems. However, the course in which these concepts are taught comes early in thestudent's post baccalaureate career. Many students at this level have not yetdeveloped basic skills such as effective note taking, building conceptual frameworksthat integrate new ideas with existing knowledge, and the need to utilize conceptsfrom prerequisite courses. This paper describes web-based supplemental materialsdeveloped at California State Polytechnic University Pomona that enable students atany time during their academic career to review and practice these foundationalnetwork analysis concepts, and presents assessment results showing that thesetools have improved student learning. We intend to improve learning and retentionby providing engaging interactive online resources, including lectures, motivated bypractical real world examples and supported by embedded self-tests. Theselearning materials are online to enrich freshman electrical engineering learning, butcan also be accessed by students in follow-on courses to refresh their knowledge-base at any time.
