Ulan Dakeev received a master's degree in summer 2011 and is currently enrolled in the doctoral program at the University of Northern Iowa. Research interests include renewable energy, wind energy, wind turbines, solar panels, solar energy, and management of renewable energy.
Kenan Baltaci is a doctoral student of industrial technology at University of Northern Iowa. He received B.S. in electrical engineering degree from Istanbul Technical
University in Turkey. Following, a master's degree in industrial technology was granted from University of Northern Iowa. Baltaci is currently a doctoral student at University of Northern Iowa and working on hybrid vehicle systems as a research area.
Design and Implementation of a 12 kW Wind-Solar Distributed Power and Instrumentation System Education and training of workforce of _______ in renewable energy applications havebecome a significant factor in the United States. Although qualified technicians with AASdegrees in electromechanical and wind technology areas may address the wind industry’sworkforce needs in the short term, having a skilled technical workforce with a BS degree in EETwith an emphasis on advanced wind power projects such as variable wind speed and frequencyissues, turbine generator testing, troubleshooting, data acquisition, monitoring, and contemporarysubjects on grid-tie technologies, together with knowledge on liberal arts courses will fosterbetter educated and efficient citizens who can help advance the wind power development. A number of students, technicians, and faculty members at the University of __________established a 1.5kW grid connected wind-solar hybrid power station on campus in 2002. Thissystem has been used for teaching and research purposes besides the green power generation oncampus. There has been an increase on number of students and interest to renewable energysystems and related projects. This increase brought a demand to increase capacity and size of thewind-solar energy system and laboratory activities on renewable energy technology. Moreoverthe university administration has been supporting renewable energy projects on campus sincethis very first system was established. Thanks to a grant of $90,000 from the state energy officeand a partial sponsorship from a DEED grant through a local energy utility company in 2010-2011, the capacity of existing solar-wind hybrid power system was enhanced to 12kW system bystudents and faculty of multidisciplinary majors in the department of________________. Thiswork was supported by the State of _________and University administration as part ofrenewable energy promotion in the state and university community. Recently a 12kW solar-windhybrid power station was established to enhance university’s sustainability efforts. The integration of wireless sensors and LabViewTM based monitoring instrumentationsystem has been accomplished by the students and staff at the university. This system iscurrently used to generate renewable energy for the campus while it serves as a testbed for theBS in EET curriculum. The system also serves as an educational and research demonstration foroutreach activities, and STEM education. Local farmers particularly showed interest to learn andestablished similar systems on their properties. Also a real-time data is available online of thesystem for the research and teaching purposes. The outcomes of this educational project arelisted as follows: a) benefits on power and economy; b) environmental benefits; c) educationaland community outreach; d) applied research; e) a real-life renewable energy testbed forengineering technology undergraduate and graduate students. This project is one of the campus-wide efforts to promote energy conservation and use ofclean energy resources. All the steps, from design to implementation of the system, cost, equipment and tools used, and student outcomes worked in the project will be reported in detailin the paper. Submitted to the ASEE 2012 Conference and Exposition for the Energy Conversion and Conservation Division (ECCD) to be peer reviewed. October 7, 2011
