Abstract

Develop a cross browser compatible virtual and remote laboratory with zero plug-in installation Virtual and Remote Laboratories/experiments (VR-Labs) are an inevitable reality andnecessity of Internet enabled education in Engineering and other STEM fields. However, theeffective emulation of problem-solving dynamics from hands-on experimentation is needed forany distance education platform to be integrated into the coursework of educational institutions. Our VR-Labs research is developing a software and hardware platform that allows users/studentsto access and control both physical and virtual/simulated lab experiments/assignments remotely, via the Internet, with minimal to zero-installation beyond a web browser. To allow rapid development, National Instruments (NI) software and hardware is used forthe programming, data acquisition, and actuation of Remote labs. The programming of Virtuallabs is done with either NI LabVIEW or Java. Currently we’re developing Digital SignalProcessing (DSP) Remote Labs, and creating HTML and JavaScript web-page interfaces for allexisting Virtual labs to eliminate their required LabVIEW Run-time engine client-side plug-in. Multiple Virtual labs for Data Communications, AC/DC circuits, and DSP subjects areavailable for coursework experimentation and integration. Our Smart Vibration PlatformRemote lab presents students the dynamics of active structural control and Smart Martial Alloys.VR-Labs require only web browser, making them highly accessible, and combined traditionalphysical laboratories, they’ll advance engineering education into future. Currently, our platform is transitioning to cross browser compatible web-pages codedeliminate the need for browser plug-ins or third party downloads in order to operate. These web-pages deliver content processed on workstations that host the VR-Labs via web-services. Thesein turn are managed through our server’s experiment scheduler to eliminate resource/assignmentconflicts.
