H. Felix Lee is a professor and Program Director of Industrial and Manufacturing Engineering at Southern Illinois University, Edwardsville. He holds a Ph.D. in industrial and operations engineering from the University of Michigan. His area of interest is in 3D modeling and applications, CAD/CAM/CAE, manufacturing system design and planning, and computer simulation and OR. He renovated the industrial and manufacturing engineering curriculum with introduction of CAD/CAM/CAE and 3D modeling applications to manufacturing systems, and has taught Boeing engineers on the subjects for 12 years. He was a recipient of a NSF/MRI grant on developing a supply-chain manufacturing system and a NSF research grant on developing an integrated design-aid tool for flexible manufacturing systems. He authored a book on CAD on Unigraphics: Engineering Design in Computer Integrated Design and Manufacturing. His papers appear in numerous refereed journals, books, and proceedings. In 2004, he organized the CAD/CAM/CAE student design contest in the PLM (Product Lifecycle Management) World Conference and chaired the first five contests in 2004 through 2008. Lee is a member of SME, IIE, Tau Beta Pi, and Phi Kappa Phi.

Abstract

Developing a State-of-Art Supply Chain Test-bed for Engineering Education and Research at Southern Illinois University Edwardsville (SIUE) Donte J Harris, Sohyung Cho, H. Felix Lee, Kevin Hubbard, and Luis Youn School of Engineering Southern Illinois University Edwardsville Edwardsville, IL 62026In today’s fierce global competition that forces manufacturing enterprises to producemore complicated, reliable and short life cycle products, there is an urgent need for theSIUE to bring its research and educational focus on product life cycle encompassing fromdesign to retail. To promote this shift of the focus, we have recently developed a unique,multi-disciplinary and state-of-the-art laboratory funded by National Science FoundationMRI grant. The purpose of this paper is to introduce the composition and operation ofthe laboratory, its initial outcome, and the potential benefits for future engineeringeducation and research. In order to develop this new facility, we acquired the new equipment including anautomatic storage and retrieval system (AS/RS), an intelligent robot, open-architectureconveyor, a programmable logic controller and RFID module, and integrated them withthe existing processing and testing equipment in house. Researchers and students canuse this facility to catalyze a wide range of cutting edge research projects spanningmechanical, industrial, manufacturing and electrical engineering and to renovateengineering curriculum to practice the theme of the product life cycle in the subsequenteffort. These include: (i) studying the impact of RFID on integrated logistics fromfactory to end-customer, (ii) developing decision support models and tools for strategicand tactical operations in a sensor-enabled supply chain environment; and (iii) analyzingvulnerability and sensitivity of distributed supply chain networks to various disturbances. This facility can provide a valuable environment for faculty, technical experts andstudents to work together to develop solutions to manufacturing and supply chainproblems in the context of the product life-cycle. Specifically, the laboratory is used asresearch test-bed and educational platform for faculty and students, by integrating variousstages of the product life-cycle including design (CAD) and analysis (CAE),manufacturing (CAM/CIM), warehousing, retailing, and the end-customer interface.Importantly, the laboratory has been designed in a generic manner so that it would allowfurther additions, which can be available in the future upon technological advancements. For example, the proposed state-of-the-art facility in this project employs RFID (RadioFrequency IDentification) technology to facilitate the integration of manufacturing andinventory control by providing efficient and reliable tracking of product flow throughoutthe system. In a real life setting to produce “chess sets,” the students have opportunitiesto participate in all stages of the product life-cycle including their design, manufacturing, handling and retailing. In this setting, SIUE Bookstore is a primary retailer of the chesssets. A Web-server system is used to enable online control and integration of information, production, and cash flows.
