Abstract

Developing Construction Management Educators: Is Instructional Design, Development and Evaluation the Key? AbstractAs the 21st century unfolds, there is a growing need for well-educated and professionalConstruction Managers to oversee the expansion of the built environment. A review of theexisting colleges and universities offering advanced degrees in areas such as BuildingConstruction, Construction, Construction Science, and Construction Management in the UnitedStates clearly indicate that there is a wide variety of programs available to develop theseindividuals. The review also shows that there is a lack of programs to train the educatorsrequired to deliver the growing amount of instruction required to keep up with the demand ofindustry. This paper presents a method for developing future CM educators that is based onInstructional Design, Development, and Evaluation (IDDE) principles rooted in Educationtheory. Using the Dick and Carey model of instruction, a model is presented to analyze whetherthere is any significant difference between face-to-face and self instruction to demonstrate thisintegration. The case study focuses on an existing course taught at a northeast United States PhDgranting institution entitled “Construction Safety.” It is anticipated that applying this type ofresearch to future doctoral candidates in the area of Construction Management will createindividuals who will be able to step into the classroom and deliver high quality and invigoratinginstruction.
