Abstract

Development of a New Power System Course: Power System Analysis Using Advanced SoftwareAbstractThis paper presents the development of a new course titled Power System Analysis UsingAdvanced Software at the department of electrical and computer engineering at our university. There is a pressing demand in power industry for students with skills in widely used powersoftware. This new course aims to meet such a demand by providing hands on experiences forstudents on prevailing power industry software.Power utilities routinely utilize software packages such as Power System Simulator forEngineering (PSS/E), Electromagnetic Transients Program (EMTP), and Computer AidedProtection Engineering (CAPE) for system studies and setting relays. Regular electricalengineering courses focus on theories only and the students do not have opportunities to learnthese advanced software. A new class was developed at our university to meet student needs. This new course has been offered two times in the past and is being taught in this semester again. This paper will discuss the course contents and pedagogical approach employed to successfullydeliver the new course. The effectiveness of the class is evaluated through assigned projects andpresentations and also through our university’s official course evaluation system. Evaluationstudies have indicated that the students feel the class is very valuable and the teaching method iswell received.
