Alireza Kavianpour DeVry University, Pomona

Alireza Kavianpour received his Ph.D. degree from University of Southern California (USC). He is currently Senior Professor at DeVry University, Pomona, Calif. Kavianpour is the author and co-author of more than 40 technical papers, all published in IEEE Journals or referred conferences. Before joining DeVry University, he was a researcher at the University of California, Irvine, and consultant at Qualcom, Inc. His main interests are in the areas of embedded systems and computer architecture.

David Layton DeVry University, Pomona

David Layton is an associate professor of English at DeVry University in California, where he teaches general literature, science fiction, composition (both beginning and advanced), ethics, and public speaking. He has a Ph.D. in English from the University of California, Santa Barbara (1994). His dissertation was about the portrayal of science in postmodernist fiction. He has published scholarly articles on science fiction, literature, television, film, and music. His most recent work includes a paper presented at two conferences about the design of university-level science fiction courses, using science fiction to teach the ethics of technology. He also gave a talk on Doctor Who and the critique of capitalism. At the end of 2011, his book on the humanism of Doctor Who will be published.

Abstract

Online Teaching of Senior ProjectsAbstractThe senior projects course is an important assessment tool for technology related majors. Almostevery university uses this course for evaluating graduates. A Yahoo search with the keyword“senior projects” will result in more than ten thousand hits, and perhaps all refer to onsiteteaching of this course. The requirements for onsite teaching can vary from university touniversity. Often, the course consists of research on a selected topic, design, presentation forreview by judges (faculty, staff, and industry representative), and a final document. Althoughthere is much information about senior projects requirements, there are no suggestions forteaching this course online.One of the authors of this proposal has taught the senior projects course for more than twodecades using traditional onsite method of teaching. However, with the today’s trend of teachingcourses online, especially with the challenges of teaching technical courses, the need toformulate an efficient online method of teaching senior projects courses has a high priority.In this paper, the result of the authors’ finding in this field, new requirements andrecommendations for teaching the senior projects course online will be discussed.
