Abstract

Particle Transport, Deposition and Removal - Integration of Simulations and Experiments Goodarz Ahmadi and Suresh Dhaniyala Department of Mechanical and Aeronautical Engineering Clarkson University, Potsdam, NY, 13699-5725, USA Particle transport, deposition and removal occur in many important processes inmicroelectronic, imaging and pharmaceutical industries. In addition, numerousenvironmental processes involve particle transport, deposition and removal. In the lastdecade, significant research progress in the areas of particle transport, deposition andremoval has been made. A series of courses were developed to make the new importantresearch findings available to seniors and first year graduate students in engineeringdepartments through specialized curricula. This project involved an integration ofnumerical simulations and experiments in a series of courses. The materials for the firsttwo courses were made available on the web and the course was taught at two campusessimultaneously. These courses are composed of four modules: • Fundamentals of particle transport, dispersion, deposition, and removal. • Computational modeling of particle transport, deposition, and removal. • Experimental study of particle transport, deposition, and removal, and aerosol instrumentation. • Industrial applications of particle transport, deposition, and removal. The experimental and aerosol instrumentation course was the third one in this series. Inthis course, the students were introduced to the basics of aerosol experimentation andtheory of aerosol measurement. As a part of this course, the students conductedexperiments using the state of the art aerosol instrumentation, complementing thetheoretical concepts introduced in this course and the previous two offerings.
