Abstract

Brief Proposal for Panel at ASEE National Conference Environmental Engineering Division San Antonio, TX June, 2012 Date of Proposal: June 7, 2011Panel Name: Educational Preparation of Environmental Engineering Students forProfessional LifeThe panel will consist of 4 highly placed environmental engineers representing theconsulting and regulatory communities. The panel could be expanded to include heavyindustry. The panelists will all be drawn from Texas, which has a large concentration ofprimary and secondary extractive industry, along with its attendant pollution controlproblems and opportunities.The panelists are all employers and will share their insights on the strong points anddeficiencies of the education of new engineering graduates (all degree levels) entering thelabor force. They will make suggestions regarding improvement of curricula andteaching methods. The intention is provoke a lively debate.The panel will be organized by the President of the American Academy of EnvironmentalEngineers (AAEE), an organization which is sponsored by ASEE. AAEE develops andimplements specialty certification programs for environmental engineers.
