AB  - A pilot study about creating future graduate students in engineering: Does undergraduate researchpromote graduate education?AbstractThe VMI Mechanical Engineering Department is interested in investigating factors thatencourage cadets to choose to pursue graduate education. This paper outlines a new programthat introduces cadets to the world of graduate education, a facet that is not available in ourundergraduate institution. The core of the program is to partner with existing graduate schools togerminate the seed of future work in graduate engineering education. The goal is to foster thebenefits of graduate education and the career enhancement that obtaining the education affords,ultimately developing a better communicator and lifelong learner. In this paper we introduce theconceptual framework of the program and results of its early implementation. We will alsodiscuss future research with a continued longitudinal study of the program. The results of thiswork would be generalizable to any undergraduate engineering program seeking to encouragestudents’ graduate studies.
