Abstract

Women’s Campus Leadership Seminar ProgramAbstractOur university has many programs and departments that are in traditionally male-dominatedareas. Many universities, ours included, do not necessarily see the problems with thisenvironment and the availability for leadership roles for female faculty. Too often women arenot as exposed as men to leadership opportunities, for various reasons. Two of our female faculty attended a certificate program during summer 2011 entitled“Executive Leadership for Women in Higher Education.” The focus of this program was toassist women reach the next level of their leadership in their career. Our President and a few ofour female faculty have decided that we need to create a Women’s Leadership Initiative programto facilitate empowering female leadership and awareness on campus. We want to introduce ourfemale faculty to the methods necessary to become a leader. This paper will focus on how the program was developed, selecting participants, and the topicalinformation covered in the program. The program is being developed by the faculty thatattended the certificate program. Participants are being selected based on an application thatexplains how the participant will benefit from such a program in their career. For our first offering of the program that is being done as a pilot, we will be focusing on severalmajor topics. 1. Personal Branding – helping female faculty determine their personal brand and making it work for them 2. Life Balance – how can female faculty balance the workload of their job while also being wife, mother, daughter, sister, etc 3. Personal Advisory Board, Networking – developing a group of people who knows this person and their capabilities 4. Language, communication, influence and social intelligence – assisting women to understand their own way of communicating, and how they can change that communication to better influence in a leadership role 5. Negotiation skills – helping female faculty be more effective negotiatorsOur paper will detail the activities of each of the sessions and conclude with a summary of thebenefits of the program and areas for improvement.
