Peter J. Schubert, Ph.D., P.E. is Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering at IUPUI, and serves as the Director of the Richard G. Lugar Center for Renewable Energy. He has published 75 technical papers and ha 35 US patents. He has been the principal investigator on grants from NASA, DOE, DOD, USDA, and GSA.
Optimization of a Trash to Energy System Authors: Drew Witte, Peter J. Schubert IUPUI Converting waste to energy (WTE) has huge potential for displacing fossil fuels, reducing landfill volumes, and extracting recyclables. A large scale gasifier for efficient conversion of municipal solid waste (MSW) was donated to the university for study and optimization. Our team consists of undergraduate and graduate students, faculty from two urban universities, plus industrial WTE engineers. This paper outlines the organization, tasks, and methods by which the team updated and improved the following subsystems: seals and gaskets; process and algorithm; ergonomics; and feedstock loading. Lessons learned from this process have been incorporated into a fresh design for improved system performance.
