Abstract

ANN-Supported Numerical Protection and Control Relay Center for TCSC Compensated Transmission Lines for Classroom DemonstrationsAbstractThis paper reports the research on a protection system for classifying and locating faults inthyristor-controlled series compensated (TCSC) transmission lines. The protection scheme isbased on control and protection relay center SEL-311L from Schweitzer EngineeringLaboratories supported with multi-layer perceptron artificial neural networks (MLPNN). Three-phase power system currents and voltages at the relay location are used as inputs to MLPNN-Supported SEL-311L relay center. Two neural networks are trained to address fault classificationand location. Feasibility and reliability of the protection scheme are explored using fault data setof a typical 380 kV power system grid modules in the University XXX and XXX joint SmartGrid Lab. Studied system is subjected to all possible faults at different operating conditions, including fault location, fault inception angle and fault resistance. Experiment resultsdemonstrate the robustness, superiority and fault tolerant features of this novel protection system. Moreover, this system is being used in senior undergraduate and graduate level courses inelectrical engineering and electrical engineering technology to demonstrate and furtherinvestigate the effects of anomalies in power grid on modern control systems and modernprotection solutions in smart grid environment.
