Dr. Soma Chakrabarti is the director of the Center for Engineering and Interdisciplinary Professional Education (CEIPE) and the associate director of Continuing Education at the University of Kansas. She provides strategic direction in business development to the units of Aerospace Short Course Program, Engineering Technology Certificate Program, Engineering Management Certificate Program, engineering conferences and interdisciplinary engineering short courses, and develops and implements industry-academia-government collaborations in continuing engineering education. As an associate director of KU Continuing Education, she is responsible for co-developing and implementing strategic initiatives in international partnerships, new program development and university-industry collaborations. She has a doctorate in biochemical engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi.

Zachary Gredlics University of Kansas

Zach Gredlics is a Senior Program Manager of Program Development and In-House Courses in the Center for Engineering and Interdisciplinary Professional Education at the University of Kansas Continuing Education. In this role, he is responsible for developing new short course training programs in engineering, as well as coordinating all aspects of engineering short courses, including budgeting, procurement, content customization and legal framework. Zach has a BA from the University of Kansas, and an MBA in International Business from Baker University

Kevin Curry is a senior program manager at the Center for Engineering and Interdisciplinary Professional Education of Continuing Education at the University of Kansas. He manages online engineering and technology certificate programs as well as live programs in engineering management and supply chain technology. In addition, Kevin manages a large, annual, international conference focused on engineering education which is co-sponsored by IEEE and ASEE.

Kara Lynch is publication manager in the Center for Engineering and Interdisciplinary Professional Education at the University of Kansas and is responsible for developing and managing all publications related to marketing. She is also responsible for developing a communication and market research analysis strategy for the engineering and interdisciplinary programs at KUCE. Kara’s bachelor’s degree is in communications from Fort Hays State University, Hays, Kansas, and her master’s degree is in journalism with communications emphasis from the University of Kansas.

Abstract

Sustaining Successful Continuing Engineering Education Professional Education Programs by Systematic Assessment of the Key Performance ResultsExcellent continuing professional development programs comprehensively measure its keyperformance results with respect to several elements: academic achievements, financial resultsand quality of the programs offered. Additionally, the customer and people feedback need to becritically reviewed. Also, societal impacts cannot be ignored. Based on the InternationalAssociation for Continuing Engineering Education Quality Program Self-Assessment Model,an engineering and interdisciplinary professional education unit in a national public researchuniversity has developed a systematic process for self-assessment, quality management andfinancial sustainment, and charted a path for achieving excellence. This paper will focus on thefollowing parameters: people, programs and processes, and will show the approach that thisunit has taken to define the organizational leadership, implement the strategies and itsadherence to the University and Continuing Education Division policies. Special emphasis willbe given on the development, management and financial sustainment of international shortcourses, online engineering technology programs, engineering management certificates andengineering conferences, and a model for sharing the financial success with the partners willalso be presented. The unit has a successful global presence; therefore, the key issuesassociated with the self-assessment as well as clients’ evaluations of continuing engineeringeducation units, as experienced in international programming, will be discussed.
