Dr. Wendy Reffeor, Ph.D. is an Assistant of Engineering in the Padnos School of Engineering at Grand Valley State
University. She holds a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering from GMI Engineering & Management Institute, an M.S. in Mechanical Engineering from Purdue University and a Ph.D. from Michigan State University. Since joining GVSU, she has focused on introducing design in traditionally analytical courses in the Engineering Mechanics sequence.

Dr. Sung-Hwan Joo earned his Ph.D. from the University of Oklahoma in 2006. He has served as an assistant professor at Grand Valley State University since 2008. His research areas are CAD, Design Optimzation, FEA.

Abstract

Product Design and Manufacturing in the Freshman YearThis paper summarizes a successful attempt to provide freshman engineering students with an industrysponsored design and build project. The steps in the design process, interaction with the sponsor andthe final design and build stages are illustrated and quantified.
