Engineering Program Manager, Baton Rouge Community College, August 2011 – Present:

LA-SiGMA EPSCoR - collaborate with LSU engineering and mathematics faculty to develop modules to train community college students to use sophisticated materials research instrumentation, assist with the Beowulf Boot Camp for high school students and teachers and facilitate the participation of BRCC students in the research experiences for undergraduates (REU) programs focused on computational and experimental materials science

NSF S-STEM Scholarships – collaborate with faculty in the LSU College of Engineering to select students for scholarships to LSU who have completed the AS degree in pre-engineering at BRCC

Managing the engineering program at Baton Rouge Community College to make AS Engineering transition to a 4-year college as smooth as possible and to support and enhance the chances of students’ academic success

Abstract

XX/XX – A Partnership for STEM Student Success NSF STEP Project # xXThis STEP Type 1B project enhances the existing partnership between Baton RougeCommunity College Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics Division (XX-STEM) and Louisiana State University College of Engineering (XX-CoE) to fosterSTEM students’ completion of two year Associates Degrees at XX and four yearBachelor of Science degrees at XX. Particular emphasis is placed on Engineering andConstruction Management (E/CM) disciplines for which XX-XX have recentlyformalized articulation agreements.One project goal is to increase the number of XX AS/AAS E/CM graduates by 5 per yearto an annual rate of 25 students, all with strong academic foundations for further E/CMstudy at XX. At XX, the goal is to improve the overall 2nd-3rd year retention andultimately improve the cumulative 6th year graduation rate by 2-3% per year so that itapproaches the current university average for all entering freshmen (59%). Building uponthe lessons learned from first STEP grant, these goals will be accomplished through thefollowing actions: 1) development and implementation of a pre-engineering learningcommunity at XX; 2) integration of supplemental instruction/academic in coreSTEM/Engineering courses at both institutions; 3) provide opportunities for facultydevelopment and engagement across institutions to improve student learning and providebetter faculty student interaction; 4) provide the environment and training necessary todevelop mentoring relationships between students (particularly transfer students), and 5)establish mechanisms for effective monitoring and continual improvement.Although the project is in its first year, several program objectives have been met. Thejoint team (XX-XX personnel) hosted the Project kick off meeting in January with aninternal and external advisory board, hired several project personnel including a transfercounselor, project coordinators for both institutions, and a coordinator to work with theundergraduates to implement the peer led team leaders, and hosted the 7th annual FacultyDevelopment Workshop. Xx and Xx gateway-engineering courses have been aligned andfaculty at both institutions are collaborating frequently to ensure that students are beingprovided the best learning experiences.In addition, five upper-class students in the XX College of Engineering and 2 studentsfrom XX were hired to be Undergraduate Learning Assistants (LA). The XX STEPhosted 12 hours of Peer Mentor training for new mentors; training includes boundaries,appropriate behavior, leadership, mentoring, cultural awareness and generationalcommunication differences. Peer tutors are providing tutoring at XX for students in mathand science courses. To maintain networking and collaboration among peer learningassistants, SI Leaders are holding weekly sessions for engineering students at XX.Surveys have been developed in conjunction with a PhD student in psychology and anoutside evaluator. Pre program surveys have been given to the LA and peer mentors.Annual retention and other pertinent data will be gathered and reviewed on the 14th dayof fall each year. XX surveyed continuing and graduating STEM students in April, 2013.
