She is interested in bibliometrics, altmetrics, data management, and library instruction.
A different view: An inquiry into visualization of bibliometrics dataBibliometrics is a set of methods to quantitatively analyze scientific literature. The development ofbibliometrics methods was facilitated by the publication of the Science Citation Index and continued withthe increasing computing power. However, even though nowadays bibliometrics have many uses - the(debatable) standard in measuring the research impact or in tenure promotion; facilitate the discovery oftopical, spatial, and temporal scientific trends; or valuable tools in collection development and evaluationof students’ information literacy - the data collected through bibliometrics methods are still difficult toprocess, analyze, and comprehend. A solution for these issues was found in applying visual informationtechniques to bibliometrics data to create graphical representation that enhance users’ understanding.Information visualization relies on human eye-mind relationship that allows understanding of largeamounts of information at once and as a result it is increasingly applied in scientific research, datamining, and more. With the increasing availability of sophisticated tools that allow for easy data analysis, mapping bibliometrics data have become more accessible to librarians. This poster examines the value of visualization in conjunction to bibliometrics data. The author used Sci2Tool software to analyze the data initially collected for a citation analysis project. Maps were created tovisualize the co-authors network, cited publications and types of publications cited. The author willdiscuss the difficulties encountered; reflect on the benefits of visualization of bibliometrics data, andfuture prospective.
