Dr. Sanderlin serves as the Director of Global Engagement for Virginia Tech's College of Engineering. She provides leadership for international initiatives and works closely with engineering faculty to develop new institutional partnerships and international opportunities for engineering students. Her research focuses on internationalization of higher education, faculty engagement, and international program assessment.
Kim Lester Virginia Tech
Dr.Lester serves as the Coordinator of Pre-College Programs at Virginia Tech's Center for the Enhancement of Engineering Diversity. She also worked as a global engagement specialist in the Office of Global Engineering Engagement and Research at Virginia Tech, providing assistance with the development, implementation and administrative support of international initiatives at the College of Engineering. She holds a Bachelor of Science in Animal Science and a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree from Cornell University as well as a Bachelor of Arts in Elementary Education from the College of Santa Fe.
Liang Li Wu University of California, Irvine
Lily Wu is the Director of Academic Innovation, Programs at the Henry Samueli School of Engineering, University of California, Irvine. Dr. Wu is responsible for implementing, overseeing and assessing the first-year engineering program and international programs to enhance and support the engineering education at the School of Engineering.
Dr. Wu received her Ph.D. degree in Material Science and Engineering from the University of California, Irvine in 2007 with primary research focuses on the design, development and integration of microfluidic systems for biomedical applications. Prior to her current position, Dr. Wu worked as a research associate at the Integrated Nanosystems Research Facility where she co-developed student research training programs and mentored undergraduate and high school students in highly multidisciplinary engineering projects.
Thomas Carl Long Virginia Tech
Tom Long serves as the graduate assistant for research and assessment as part of the Virginia Tech's College of Engineering Dean's Office. He provides support on research methodologies and performs assessments and evaluations on a variety of topics for the College.
Mr. Long is a Doctoral Candidate in Educational Research and Evaluation at Virginia Tech and currently working on his dissertation. His research focuses on the use of multi-level modeling of longitudinal data to show student growth in both cognitive and affective domains.

Corporate Partnerships for International Experiences: A Case Study Model of the Boeing Engineering Leadership Program By Nicole Sanderlin, Kim Lester and Liang Li Wu Virginia Polytechnic Institute & State University University of California IrvinePartnerships between universities and industry have long been important for schools ofengineering, but are becoming increasingly critical to consider when developing study abroadexperiences for engineering students. While attention has been called to the importance of thesepartnerships, few studies have examined what components are necessary for the success of theserelationships. Using a case study approach, this study examines one short-term summer programfor students of aerospace engineering, the Boeing Engineering Leadership Program, which wasspearheaded by the University of California Irvine in partnership with Boeing China andVirginia Tech in Beijing, China in summer 2014. The case points to four components needed fora successful partnership, including a corporate sponsor, strong lead institution, host university in-country, and the participation of US and international students. This model can be used by otherinstitutions to inform the creation of future international experiences for engineering students incollaboration with corporate partners.
