Dr. Patrick Connolly is a professor and interim department head of the Department of Computer Graphics Technology in the College of Technology at Purdue University. He has extensive experience in the aerospace design and CAD/CAE software industries, and has been serving in higher education for almost twenty years. Dr. Connolly has a BS degree in Design and Graphics Technology and an MS in Computer Integrated Manufacturing from Brigham Young University, and a PhD in Educational Technology from Purdue University. His research interests include spatial ability development, virtual and augmented reality applications, product data and lifecycle management, and innovative classroom methodologies.

Abstract

Using an Experience Design Approach to Curriculum CreationUser Experience Design (UX design) is a growing field and profession that advocates thedesign of products and services with emphasis on the resulting user experience. It takesuser-centered design one step further, in that it emphasizes not only ease of use, ease oflearning, and efficiency, but also the overall experience of interacting with the product orservice. UX Design is slowly evolving from the design of digital products such aswebsites, applications, mobile phones, etc. to the integrated design of the totality ofexperiences a customer has with an organization, its products, and its services. This newtrend recognizes that a user’s experience on an organization’s website cannot and shouldnot be divorced from the user’s experiences with phone customer service representatives,for example.This paper introduces a user experience design approach to creating a new undergraduatetechnology curriculum. It explains how processes and techniques from UX Design wereadapted and used in order to create a new and holistic undergraduate student experience.The process unfolded during the creation of a new major in human-centered design anddevelopment. We explain how we created design requirements for the new major throughconversations with stakeholders and “users” - in this case, students. We explain theconceptual foundations of the curriculum in a competency-based approach and the deepintegration of interdisciplinary education.The paper’s contributions are twofold. First, the user experience design approach isintroduced as a way to think about new course and curriculum development. Second, thenew curriculum we created is presented as an innovative example of interdisciplinary,competency-based education that integrates active and project-based learning throughoutthe undergraduate experience.
