Kathleen Meehan earned her B.S. in electrical engineering from Manhattan College and her M.S. and Ph.D. from the University of Illinois under the supervision of Prof. Nick Holonyak, Jr. She worked as a member of technical staff at Lytel, Inc., following graduation. At Polaroid, she was appointed a Senior Research Group Leader, responsible for the design of laser diodes and arrays. After leaving Polaroid, she was employed at Biocontrol Technology. She moved into academia full-time in 1997 and worked at the University of Denver, West Virginia University, and Virginia Tech. She is currently the director of the University of Glasgow-University of Electronic Science and Technology of China Electronics and Electrical Engineering programme. While at Virginia Tech, she collaborated with Dr. Robert W. Hendricks, with assistance of a number of undergraduate students, to develop an instructional platform known as Lab-in-a-Box, which is used in a number of courses within the Virginia Tech B.S.E.E. program. She continues to be actively involved in the development of mobile hands-on pedagogy as well as research on other topics in STEM education, the synthesis and characterization of nanoscale optical materials, and fermentation processes.

Abstract

A two-week course on solid state lighting was developed as part of a summer overseas immersion programme (OIP) offered at the University of XXXX to students from the YYYY and the University of Electronic Science and Technology. The aim of the OIP is to provide students with an international academic and cultural experience while building stronger ties to the University of XXXX and getting to know Scotland. The cohort of students was composed of 27 Year 1 students and 5 Year 2 students, all of whom were Chinese nationals for whom English was a second language.

The educational aims of the 10 credit course were to introduce the phenomena responsible for incandescent, fluorescent, and solid state lights, discuss issues in product design, describe associated technologies used in solid state lighting, demonstrate applications of solid state lighting during industrial and cultural visits as well as laboratory exercises, and to integrate the concepts into practice via a brief design activity. Another aim of the course was to support the development of oral English skills and technical English vocabulary through a series of active learning activities with third-year University of XXXX engineering students as laboratory demonstrators, engagement with engineers and technologies during the visits as well as with a speaker on engineering product design during one of the lecture sessions, and oral presentations on the last day of the course. Student awareness of the applications of solid state lighting as well as an introduction to Scotland and its history was developed through a series of university, company, and cultural tours.

Formal assessment of student learning about solid state lighting was based upon two written reports, an oral presentation about the design project, and an evaluation of the design during a fashion show of wearable optoelectronic ‘bling’ as well as a survey of student evaluation of instruction. Assessment of the achievement of the programme goals related to the students’ cultural experiences was obtained via a conversations with a student focus group, from a review of comments in the student evaluation of instruction, and informal conversations with the students during and after the OIP. The results of these assessments will be discussed. A review of the programme by the staff will be presented that describes best practices and recommendations for improvements that address both the technical and soft skill development as well as issues associated with course management.
