Abstract

The importance of having a critical thinking hands-on project for students in Electronic Communications course.

The paper will discuss one of the projects in Electronic Communications course which gives student the opportunity to think and apply his/her knowledge in electronics and communications to design, build and test a frequency modulated transmitter. Student must first design, build and test the oscillator circuit that is capable of generating a carrier frequency between 95MHz to 100MHz. After successfully building and testing the oscillator circuit, the student builds the required (FM) modulator and the radio frequency amplifier. Student is allowed to use an output audio source from cell phone as one of the inputs required for the modulation process. Student connects all circuits together to antenna to build a frequency modulated transmitter that will transmit to an FM radio receiver in the laboratory within a band of 88MHz to 108MHz. This is four weeks project, and student or a team of two students working together must submit a complete report, and do PowerPoint presentation including demonstration of the project to students and faculty who are invited to the presentation.
