Abstract

This paper is presented under the “Engineering education in developing nations” conference topic. It will address the College of Engineering (Qatar University, Qatar) approach to empower women in engineering. The college of engineering (CENG) has a current student body of 3000 students. Nearly, 60% of the student body are female students. The paper will address empowering women in engineering in light of the human development, relevant social aspects and women role in the society. Social challenges and barriers such as; mixed work place, predominantly male oriented work place, long distance travel to remote areas (sites, industrial areas, offshore), logistics and friendliness/suitability of the work place (protective clothing/ personal protective equipment, toilets, prayer areas) and family commitments will be addressed. The paper will present CENG efforts to engage and prepare it’s female body for their workplace, The paper will also discuss the effectiveness of candidate partnerships with the local industry to accommodate woman as an effective workforce in the workplace. Utilization of woman alumni to act as role models (Moto) to the female students is also discussed.
