Jay Watson teaches technology, web development, and coding at Cookeville High School. He received a B.S degree in Secondary Education from TTU, has over five years of IT experience, and holds a multitude of industry technology certifications. Additionally, Watson was selected as the Best of the Best of Upper Cumberland educators and served on the focus group that selected Tennessee’s new web design standards, as well as the Web Design and Coding Textbook Advisory Panel. He currently is a member of Putnam County’s digital transition and teach and lead committees.

Fred Vondra Tennessee Technological University

Currently, Dr. Vondra serves as a Professor of the Department of Manufacturing and Engineering Technology and Foundry Education Foundation Key Professor at Tennessee Tech University. His research and teaching interests are in metal casting, maintenance, STEM Education and Safety. Dr. Vondra is a member and active participant of FEF (Foundry Educational Foundation), AFS (American Foundry Society), and ASEE. He also actively attends the yearly FEF College Industry Conference. Tennessee Tech is one of only 25 certified FEF schools in North America.

Currently, Dr. Fidan serves as a Professor of the Department of Manufacturing and Engineering Technology and College of Engineering-Faculty Fellow in Innovation and Techno-Entrepreneurship at Tennessee Technological University. His research and teaching interests are in additive manufacturing, electronics manufacturing, distance learning, and STEM education. Dr. Fidan is a member and active participant of SME, ASEE, ABET, ASME, and IEEE. He is also the Associate Editor of IEEE Transactions on Components, Packaging, and Manufacturing Technology and International Journal of Rapid Manufacturing.

Abstract

Casting is one of the oldest manufacturing processes. 3D Printing is known as one of the newest technologies used in the manufacturing field, and it is almost thirty years old. Although both technologies are commonly used in various fields of industry and daily life, this research study reports a unique implementation of both technologies in a new entrepreneurial environment. The entire study had been performed in Summer 2016 as part of the Research Experiences for Teachers (RET) Supplement of a National Science foundation (NSF) funded project. In ten weeks of extensive design, 3D Printing, and casting studies, several best practices between the P16 educators and students have been established. As a follow-up, a local high school also received an equipment grant to establish similar design and 3D Printing practices for its students. This current paper will report the accomplishments of the summer RET project and its reflections from the teacher’s side.
