Elizabeth A. Cudney Missouri University of Science & Technology
Dr. Elizabeth Cudney is an Associate Professor in the Engineering Management and Systems Engineering Department at Missouri University of Science and Technology. She received her B.S. in Industrial Engineering from North Carolina State University, Master of Engineering in Mechanical Engineering and Master of Business Administration from the University of Hartford, and her doctorate in Engineering Management from the University of Missouri – Rolla. In 2013, Dr. Cudney was elected as an ASQ Fellow. In 2010, Dr. Cudney was inducted into the International Academy for Quality. She received the 2008 ASQ A.V. Feigenbaum Medal and the 2006 SME Outstanding Young Manufacturing Engineering Award. She has published four books and over 40 journal papers. She is an ASQ Certified Quality Engineer, Manager of Quality/Operational Excellence, and Certified Six Sigma Black Belt. She is a member of the ASEE, ASEM, ASQ, IIE, and the Japan Quality Engineering Society (JQES).
Susan L. Murray Missouri University of Science & Technology
Dr. Susan Murray is a Professor of Engineering Management and Systems Engineering at Missouri University of Science and Technology. Dr. Murray received her B.S. and Ph.D. in Industrial Engineering from Texas A&M University. Her M.S. is also in Industrial Engineering from the University of Texas-Arlington. She is a Professional Engineer (P.E.) registered in Texas. Prior to her academic position, she spent seven years working in the aerospace industry. Dr. Murray's research interest include safety, human factors, and engineering education.
Brittany Groner Missouri University of Science & Technology
Brittany is a student at the Missouri University of Science & Technology. She is involved in many organizations on campus including Society of Women Engineers, American Society for Engineering Management, Institute of Industrial and Systems Engineering, and Tau Beta Pi Honors Fraternity. She has been attending the university since August of 2013 and will complete her Bachelor's Degree in Engineering Management in December of 2016.

Julie Phelps Missouri University of Science & Technology
Julie Phelps has been an instructional designer at Missouri University of Science and Technology since 2010. She supports faculty in the effective use of technology in the classroom as well as blended/online course development. She holds an M.A. in Information and Learning Technologies from The University of Colorado-Denver and a B.S. Ed. from The University of Missouri, Columbia.
From 2001-2010, Julie was an instructional specialist for the eMINTS National Center providing professional development to K-12 teachers throughout Missouri. Prior to eMINTS, Julie taught elementary grades in Missouri, Texas, and Colorado over a span of 17 years.
Abstract
A learning management system is an educational resource employed in higher education to organize, document, track, report, and deliver courses. Selecting the appropriate learning management system is a critical decision for a university. This study utilizes the voice of the student to analyze usability from the students’ perspective. The goal of this project was to gather and analyze user preferences in order to select an appropriate learning management system. Data was collected through a survey to gain understanding of student’s experience with two commonly used learning management systems. The student survey evaluated the following criteria: finding course documents, finding grades, having accurate and updated grades, ease of navigation, intuitiveness, and communicating with professors. Data was also compiled from a survey given by on-campus IT personnel in order to provide internal information. In addition, a usability study conducted to gain further qualitative data for usability analysis. The information was combined to provide an overall ranking of the learning management systems.
