Mr. Matt Ray is the director for the Facilities Management Technology graduate program as well as a lecturer for the Construction Engineering Management Technology Program offered through the Purdue School of Engineering and Technology at Indian University Purdue University Indianapolis. He currently provides instruction for Facilities Planning and Management, Introduction to Facilities Engineering Systems, Financial Aspects of Facilities Management and Construction Cost and Bidding. He is a graduate of Purdue School of Engineering and Technology receiving degrees in Construction Technology, Architectural Technology and a Masters in Facility Management. His field experience includes residential and light commercial construction. He has been an architectural designer as well as superintendent for single and multi-family residential construction projects. Mr. Ray worked as an engineering design manager in the Building Components Manufacturing Industry for over fifteen years.

Abstract

Developing Improved Methodology for Online Delivery of Coursework Providing a Framework for Quality Online Education

The relative quality of online education in the United States has been in question for decades, while a higher value is placed on an education provided in a traditional classroom setting. Studies have shown that a majority of faculty members polled don’t accept the value and legitimacy of online courses. Still, many institutes have encouraged faculty members to pursue the development of online courses to meet the rising demand for quality online education. The key terms here are “quality” and “education”. A course taught face-to-face can miss meeting expectations as easily as an online course, dependent upon the instructor’s ability to create a well-planned learning environment designed to meet the students’ expectations and the educational outcomes for the course.

With the increasing trend for programs to offer some if not all course material online, developing a methodology and pedagogical strategy for online delivery of course material is critical to the success of the course and the program affecting both the instructor and the students.

Several studies have shown that online courses take considerably more preparation to deliver the same level of learning experienced with traditional approaches because of the constant effort to revise course content, publish course materials and react to ever changing technology and supported interfaces. Studies also reveal the important role clarity, consistency and simplicity of course design along with a developed sense of community plays in the students’ perception of learning.

To address these concerns, a new “Standard of Practice” was developed and implemented in multiple online course within the same program where it is currently being evaluated. The results of the evaluation, including student and instructor surveys, will be available and incorporated into the full report. The implementation included the creation of a standardized framework for deployment as well as best pedagogical practices for the online delivery of courses that reside within the current plan of study to be used to redevelop existing courses and provide a basis for developing new courses.
