Dr. Arun Saha is an Associate Professor in the Department of Chemistry & Forensic Science of Albany State University, Albany, Georgia. Dr. Saha is the Coordinator of Regents Engineering Pathway (REP) Program. Dr. Saha's research area includes electromagnetic characterization and application of artificial material.
Recently artificial material has attracted the attention of physicists and engineers because of the potential in creating exotic materials with extraordinary functionalities not available in nature. It is now foreseeable that this area of research will dominate the science and technology for decades to come. Therefore, it is critical for academic physicists and engineers to educate future generations of students in these areas to better prepare themselves for next level of opportunities. To understand the behavior of artificial materials, two important parameters, permittivity (ε) and permeability (μ), must be taught in great vigor in experimental or laboratory settings. Historically these two parameters are not being emphasized in the laboratory education because they play only a background role in fundamental understanding or design. So a laboratory activity is designed for physics and engineering course to extract parameters ε and μ from an artificial material composed of spherical metal balls arranged periodically in space. Student’s true understanding of ε and μ will be assessed through a set of pre and post lab questionnaires. Results of pre and posttest will be used to further improve the instructional design.
