Dr. Banafsheh Seyed-Aghazadeh is the James R. Myers Endowed Assistant Professor at the department of Engineering Technology at Miami University and the director of “Aerodynamics and Fluid-Structure Interactions” research laboratory. She was a postdoctoral research associate and a lecturer at the department of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst (UMass). She received her PhD from University of Massachusetts, Amherst, and master’s and bachelor’s degrees from University of Tabriz, Iran, all in Mechanical Engineering
Dr. Hamed Samandari is a Visiting Assistant Professor at the Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering Department at Miami University. Dr. Samandari also serves as an Adjunct Faculty member at the Engineering Technology Department at the Miami’s regional campus. Prior to his appointment with Miami, he spent a year as a Postdoctoral Research Fellow at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst. Hamed received his B.Sc., M.Sc., and Ph.D. degrees, all in Mechanical Engineering, form Isfahan University of Technology in Iran, University of Tabriz in Iran, and Middle East Technical University in Turkey, respectively.
In this study, students at Engineering Dynamics, a distance-learning course offered to engineering technology students, were engaged in a design-based laboratory assignment. Students from multiple campuses worked on design, manufacturing, and testing of a dynamic mechanism. Due to the cross-campus collaborative nature of this project and in the absence of little to no face-to-face interaction between team members, a key factor in success of the team was to manage team effort through an effective project management strategy. As a solution, ideas from agile way of thinking were incorporated in this design-based project. Each student in their group took the role of “leader” in one aspect of the laboratory assignment. Agile rituals such as stand-up meetings, retrospectives and iterative reviews were implemented for transparent teamwork and timely feedback. The effectiveness of how this intervention helped students was assessed through multiple tools, such as online surveys and targeted design-based questions during mid-semester exams.
