Claude Brathwaite City College of the City University of New York

Dr. Claude Brathwaite is currently the Director of Student Resources and Services at the Grove School of Engineering. He served as the Executive Director for the New York City Louis Stokes Alliance for Minority Participation in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (LSAMP). Claude initially attended Hostos Community College and later received his BS in Chemistry from the City College of the City University of New York and his Ph.D. in Organic Chemistry from the Graduate Center of the City University of New York. He was a Chancellor's Fellow (City University of New York) and a NIH Postdoctoral Fellow (Weill Cornell Medical College-Division of Molecular Medicine). As the Executive Director of the LSAMP, he was responsible for the day-to-day operation of the NYC Louis Stokes Alliance program across the 18 member campuses of City University of New York. Claude also served as the Co-Director of the Black Studies Program at the City College and the Project Director of the City College Black Male Leadership and Mentoring Program. The Black Male Leadership and Mentoring Project (BMLMP) at the City College of New York, provides a support system during the critical stages of academic and career development.

Samantha Deokinanan recently began pursuing her Master’s degree in Data Science at the CUNY School of Professional Studies. She obtained her Bachelor’s degree in Applied Mathematics from the City College of New York, where she is also working as a data coordinator for the New York City Louis Stokes Alliance for Minority Participation (LSAMP) in STEM. Her past research work included analyses of psychophysiological signals associated with attenuated psychotic symptoms and real-world applications of adaptive trimmed means.

Abstract

The Open Doors report published by the Institute of International Education, the leading not-for-profit educational and cultural exchange organization in the United States has shown that despite the increase in the number of US students studying abroad (broadly defined) there is only a twelve (12%) increase in the number of minorities studying abroad in the same period. Similarly over the same period, STEM majors going abroad showed a nine percent (9%) increase. The importance and benefits of STEM students having an international experience has been well documented.

An International Summer Research (ISR) focused on Transportation was developed utilizing the design and distribution of a Comprehensive Transportation Survey (CTS) in Feira de Santana, Bahia state (Brazil). The High Impact ISR model utilized a standard REU model with a scientific theme (Transportation), augmented with Language and Culture. This program format focused on Transportation can be used as a template to increase the level of underrepresented minority STEM students who are able to integrate the International Research experience into their curriculum and develop global competencies. In collaboration with the State University of Feira de Santana, the CTS was developed by a team of Louis Stokes Alliance scholars. A second team of twelve students at State University of Feira de Santana were trained and engaged in conducting the surveys at seven bus terminals in Feira de Santana for initial data collection.

This in person survey contains thirty-four questions and is a comprehensive list of the following parameters: General Information, which includes Demographics, Socio-Economic Status, and Household Characteristics. The second section of the survey corresponds to: Travel information, which inquires Private Vehicle Information, Origin and Destination Locations for commuting trips, Mode of Transportation, Time of Travel, Work and School Flexibility, and Transportation Costs, and Travel Satisfaction. A more extensive CTS for online deployment was also developed and was launched. The results obtained can be utilized to address the increased ridership projected for Feira de Santana as the population is projected to increase to one million by the year 2040.
