Dr. Brooks is the winner of the National Outstanding Teacher Award of the ASEE in 2015. Dr. Robert Brooks is an Associate Professor of Civil Engineering at Temple University. He is a fellow of ASCE. His research interests are Engineering Education, Civil Engineering Materials and Transportation

Students are hard pressed by myriad pressures of life. These include 1) academic, 2) financial, 3) social, and 4) miscellaneous. In general, many students have progressively become calloused to do humanitarian service due to these daily pressures. The objective of this paper is to create a paradigm shift in student humanitarian service through community engagement. A strategy was developed and successfully utilized in the course CEE 2011 Civil Engineering Materials in Spring 2016. An assignment was given and 18 students participated. They actively took part in the national Sound the Alarm program conducted by the American Red Cross. The students installed smoke alarms, replaced alarm batteries and helped residents make home fire escape plans. They outreached, educated, and provided material to their fellow citizens on home fire preparation, the number one urban disaster against humanity. They submitted to the instructor, a technical report containing the behavior of steel under high temperatures. They applied statistical analysis on the contributing factors to the home fires. They provided solutions of alternate materials based on their engineering behavior to mitigate the effects of home fires. At the end of the semester, a confidential survey was conducted and results were analyzed. The students expressed strong increase in the subject matter interest and as a result statistically
