Dr. Carmen Cioc is Associate Professor in the Engineering Technology Department, College of Engineering, at the University of Toledo. She received her Master in Aerospace Engineering from The University Politehnica of Bucharest, her Master in Physics - Professional in Photovoltaics, and her Ph.D. in Engineering, in the field of thermal sciences, from The University of Toledo.
John has been the Engineering Librarian at the University of Toledo since 2001. He is the library liaison for the entire College of Engineering. Previously he was employed as a librarian in an environmental engineering firm in Toledo, OH. His main research interests are information literacy and engineering librarianship. He served as Director of the Engineering Libraries Division of ASEE from 2016-2018.
Dr. Sorin Cioc is a clinical associate professor and undergraduate program director in the Department of Mechanical, Industrial, and Manufacturing Engineering (MIME).
This paper describes the authors’ efforts to apply project-based learning (PBL) to a senior level mechanical engineering technology (MET) course at the University of Toledo. The work is a close collaboration between the engineering and education faculty and the engineering librarian with the goal of increasing the students’ information literacy and developing their MET disciplinary competency. Students were required to work in teams on a design project which required library research to identify relevant engineering codes and standards, such as the ASHRAE standards and codes required to design an HVAC duct system. This project goals align with the new ABET criterion 3 (student outcomes 1-5) and criterion 5 (curriculum, content C, D and E).
