Abstract

The CEOs and the top management teams are constantly hard pressed to lead their companies with creativity to meet their customers’ multi-dimensional demands. They have to innovate new and valuable methods consisting of momentum and adaptability. This demand will increase during the rest of this century. Unfortunately, only one in 4 people believe they are living up to their own creative potential. To mitigate this important problem, an innovative strategy consisting of three assignments was followed for the students of a section of the course Creative Problem Solving and Engineering Design in Fall 2014. At the beginning and at the end of the semester a controlled test was given on the subject matter. At the beginning of the semester only 1 in 4 students believed they were living up to their own creative potential. At the end of the semester they demonstrated that 8 in 10 unlocked their creativity potential. The improvements were measured conducting t tests. The improvement 400% was statistically significant at an alpha value of 0.05%. The success of detailing and tailor making these assignments appropriately fitting the specific course and student needs depend on the inventiveness and genuineness of the instructor. The instructors plan to use this strategy for two more courses. Other instructors may follow a modified strategy appropriate for their courses.
